An axolotl is a type of aquatic salamander native to Mexico. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls remain in their larval stage for life, keeping their gills and living underwater.

Yes, they can be good for beginners who are willing to learn about proper tank maintenance and water conditions.

In captivity, axolotls can live 10–15 years with proper care

Axolotl legality varies. For example, they are illegal to own in DC, Virginia,  California, Maine, and New Jersey without a permit. Always check local regulations.

A single axolotl needs at least a 20-gallon tank. Bigger is better.

Usually, no heater is needed. In warmer climates, a chiller or fan may be necessary to keep water between 60°-68°F .

Set up the tank, add an ammonia source like Stability. or Dr. Tim's One and Only, and monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels until they stabilize. This can take 4–6 weeks.

They eat bloodworms, earthworms, brine shrimp, axolotl pellets, and small feeder fish (rarely and with caution).

Many axolotls do well on high-quality axolotl or carnivore pellets, though variety with live/frozen foods is ideal.

Use dechlorinated tap water. Never use distilled water—it lacks essential minerals.

Handling is not recommended unless necessary. Their skin is delicate and absorbs toxins.
